Iranian President Hails Pakistan-India Ceasefire
Highlighting Iran’s commitment to fostering lasting regional security and enhancing neighborly ties, Pezeshkian emphasized these goals as shared priorities during a joint press briefing with visiting Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Earlier this month, Pakistan and India declared a ceasefire after four days of intense military exchanges. The conflict was triggered by India’s airstrikes targeting Pakistani positions, a response to a deadly attack in Pahalgam town near Srinagar, which left 26 people dead. India accused Pakistan of backing the gunmen responsible, an allegation Islamabad firmly denied.
Pezeshkian stressed that “the resolution of differences through dialogue and peaceful means was the prerequisite for ensuring sustainable development and security in the region and world.”
Describing the bilateral talks as “constructive,” Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed Pakistan’s intention to expand cooperation with Iran, particularly in trade and economic sectors.
Sharif underscored Pakistan’s dedication to peace, noting that Islamabad aims to settle outstanding disputes with India, including the Kashmir issue, in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions.
He further affirmed his country’s support for Iran’s right to pursue peaceful nuclear energy.
Leading a senior delegation, the Pakistani prime minister touched down in Tehran on Monday to advance diplomatic and economic relations.
