UK Police Say Liverpool Vehicle Incident is not Terrorism

(MENAFN) British law enforcement announced on Monday that a major event on Water Street in Liverpool—where a vehicle plowed into a group of people—is not being categorized as an act of terrorism.

During a press briefing, Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims of Merseyside Police called the occurrence "horrific" and shared her sympathies for all individuals who were hurt.

The incident unfolded as supporters of Liverpool Football Club gathered to rejoice in their team's Premier League championship victory in the city's downtown area on Monday evening.

According to Sims, "a 53-year-old man is believed to be the driver of the vehicle," and she noted that authorities have launched an active inquiry to uncover what led to the tragic event.

David Kitchen, representing the North West Ambulance Service, expressed that emergency personnel were both "horrified and saddened" by the unfolding situation.

He verified that 27 individuals were taken to medical facilities throughout Liverpool, with two sustaining severe injuries—one of them being a child.

"Clinicians, paramedics and other medical teams were quick to support and respond to what happened on Water Street," Kitchen explained, highlighting the swift action taken by responders.

He further mentioned that a bicycle paramedic was struck during the chaos, but fortunately did not endure significant harm.

Nick Searle, Chief Fire Officer for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, described the initial scene as one with "numerous people injured." He also disclosed that four victims had been trapped beneath the car.
