Car Hits Celebrating Liverpool Fans
Authorities from Merseyside Police reported in an announcement that they were alerted shortly after 6 p.m. local time (1700 GMT) about an incident involving a car and multiple pedestrians on Water Street.
The area was filled with elated fans who had gathered to celebrate the team's success.
"The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained," police stated. "Emergency services are currently on the scene."
In a subsequent release, officials confirmed the arrested suspect as a "53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area."
Law enforcement urged the public "not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding" the event and stated that "Extensive enquiries" were underway to determine the events that led to the crash.
Clips shared on social media depicted scenes of disorder, with some fans seemingly being pulled along by the moving vehicle before it eventually stopped.
The footage captured loud cries and widespread confusion as emergency personnel quickly arrived.
The North West Ambulance Service issued a message saying it is "currently assessing the situation and working alongside other emergency services."
They emphasized that "Our priority is to ensure that anyone in need receives medical assistance as quickly as possible."
At the time of reporting, it was not immediately known whether any individuals had sustained injuries.
