NSW Floods Damage 10,000 Properties, Impact 50,000 Residents

(MENAFN) Record-breaking floods in New South Wales (NSW) have reportedly damaged 10,000 properties and impacted 50,000 residents, Australian authorities confirmed on Saturday.

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) has commenced damage assessments as flood conditions begin to ease in some areas, though warnings persist in others as water continues its downstream movement.

"Flood waters in some locations are starting to subside, however are also still rising in other areas as flows move downstream," the SES stated.

Emergency warnings are still active for several locations, including Taree, Kempsey, and Port Macquarie.

NSW SES Chief Superintendent Paul McQueen emphasized the ongoing danger: “I reiterate this is still a dangerous situation where significant impacts to infrastructure and properties are likely to have occurred. Unfortunately, it is not possible to let people return to their homes until water further subsides and we’re sure they can access their homes and communities safely."

The death toll from the NSW floods tragically rose to five on Friday, following the confirmation of another man's death after he was reported missing on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese assured the public that his government is collaborating closely with state and local authorities to provide necessary support to affected Australians during both the immediate crisis and the subsequent recovery phase.

"Conditions remain critical with flood and evacuation warnings in place," Albanese posted on X.
According to media reports, thousands in the affected regions are without power and many remain isolated. The weather agency has also cautioned that strong winds are anticipated for Monday and Tuesday.
