Ukrainian representative claims US pressured Kiev on minerals agreement ‘like in a mafia movie’
(MENAFN) Greenland has granted a 30-year mining permit to a Danish-French partnership, Greenland Anorthosite Mining (GAM), to extract anorthosite—a mineral resembling moon rock and considered an environmentally friendly substitute for aluminum production. This decision comes amid growing international focus on the Arctic region, including repeated remarks by US President Donald Trump about purchasing the autonomous territory, which remains under Danish sovereignty.
Anorthosite, a white rock containing aluminum, micro silica, and calcium, will be mined and shipped by GAM for use in the fiberglass sector as a greener replacement for kaolin. The project is supported by the French investment firm Jean Boulle Group and public investment funds from both Greenland and Denmark.
Naaja Nathanielsen, Greenland’s Minister for Mineral Resources, emphasized that the initiative aims to scale up mining operations to offer a climate-conscious alternative to bauxite, a key material for producing aircraft, vehicles, and defense equipment. She is hopeful that mining activities will commence within five years.
Despite heightened geopolitical interest and Trump’s efforts to buy Greenland—including threats to use force—the US has yet to invest significantly in the island. Nathanielsen remarked that although American investors have visited, no major financial commitments have been made. In contrast, collaboration with EU partners is progressing well.
