Trump Considers Privatizing Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump revealed that he plans to consult with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte before finalizing his decision.
“Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are doing very well, throwing off a lot of CASH,” Trump stated. “The time would seem to be right.”
The two entities, which were placed under federal conservatorship by the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) during the 2008 financial crisis, have remained under government control. While prior administrations have discussed ending the conservatorship, no substantial action has been taken.
Trump’s remarks suggest a possible renewal of efforts to privatize the companies, which are essential players in the U.S. housing market, helping to purchase and guarantee mortgages.
