Kremlin replies to EU sanctions warning
(MENAFN) The Kremlin has reiterated its commitment to a long-term resolution of the Ukraine conflict but firmly rejected what it calls threats and ultimatums from the European Union. On Monday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized that Russia will not tolerate being addressed in such terms, particularly in response to Berlin’s warning of further sanctions if Moscow does not agree to a ceasefire by May 12.
President Vladimir Putin recently proposed restarting direct negotiations with Ukraine without any preconditions. However, Ukraine has insisted that talks can only begin after a 30-day ceasefire, a demand echoed by its European allies.
Commenting on Germany's ultimatum, Peskov declared, “The language of ultimatums is unacceptable for Russia,” and reminded reporters that similar pressure had come from European leaders—including those from France, Germany, the UK, and Poland—who visited Kiev recently as part of the so-called “coalition of the willing.”
Despite rejecting the ultimatum, Peskov underscored Russia’s willingness to return to the negotiating table in Istanbul with the aim of achieving a comprehensive peace deal. He stated that Moscow seeks a genuine diplomatic solution that tackles the underlying causes of the conflict and leads to enduring peace.
Regarding the proposed ceasefire, Peskov said that Russia is open to the idea in principle, but emphasized the need for guarantees to ensure that Ukraine does not use the pause to reorganize its military or intensify mobilization efforts.
