Moscow describes Western Europe’s attempts as ‘complete fiasco’
(MENAFN) Western European countries have failed in their attempts to weaken Russia and are instead prolonging the conflict in Ukraine, according to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Grushko. In a statement to TASS on Monday, Grushko accused the UK, France, and Germany of having no real interest in peace, claiming their true intentions are to see Russia defeated militarily, isolated internationally, and economically destabilized.
“These goals—defeating Russia, isolating it, crippling its economy, and pushing for regime change—have all ended in total failure,” Grushko stated. He added that the EU’s overarching objective appears to be inflicting maximum damage on Russia.
His comments followed Germany’s warning of additional sanctions if Moscow does not agree to a 30-day ceasefire proposed by Ukraine and supported by the EU. In response, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov rejected the demand, emphasizing that Russia would not respond to threats or ultimatums.
President Vladimir Putin has instead proposed holding unconditional peace talks with Ukraine on May 15 in Türkiye. However, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has maintained that he will only meet with Putin if Russia first agrees to a ceasefire.
Negotiations between Russia and Ukraine last collapsed in the spring of 2022, with each side blaming the other for making unreasonable demands. Putin claims that Ukraine initially accepted some of Russia’s terms before abruptly withdrawing from talks.
Moscow continues to reject Ukraine’s latest ceasefire proposal, arguing that Kiev would use the break to reinforce its military. Putin has reiterated that any settlement must include an end to Ukraine's mobilization and foreign arms supplies, as well as a commitment to abandoning its NATO ambitions and recognizing Russian sovereignty over Crimea and four other regions that voted to join Russia in 2022.
