Kim Jong-Un Condemns Warship Accident
The unfortunate event took place in the eastern harbor city of Chongjin, where a newly constructed 5,000-ton destroyer was supposed to be launched.
However, the vessel's rear section moved ahead of its front, leading to structural failure and halting the ship’s departure from the slipway.
According to the news agency, the setback was blamed on “inexperience” and “operational carelessness,” highlighting a lack of proper preparation and handling during the launch process.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who attended the launch, strongly criticized the blunder, labeling it a “criminal act” born out of “absolute carelessness, irresponsibility and unscientific empiricism.”
He emphasized that the failure exceeded what could be considered acceptable, expressing severe frustration over the incident.
The destroyer was intended to be a major enhancement to the country’s naval capabilities, representing a bold initiative in military ship production.
Nonetheless, the flawed launch has triggered sharp internal scrutiny from the top levels of leadership.
This incident comes at a time when North Korea has been intensifying its naval modernization programs, revealing new weapon systems amidst escalating friction with neighboring countries.
