Another Ukrainian citizen gets charged in UK Premier arson investigation

(MENAFN) A Ukrainian national has been charged in connection with a series of arson attacks in London that targeted properties linked to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, according to the Metropolitan Police. The police identified the suspect as 34-year-old Petro Pochynok, who was arrested on Monday and charged with conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life. He is now the third suspect in the case.

The arson incidents occurred in quick succession earlier this month: a vehicle was set on fire on May 8, a fire was lit at a property entrance on May 11, and another similar attack took place at a residential address on May 12. Although the authorities have not named the specific target, they revealed that all three incidents are linked to a high-profile public figure, prompting the investigation to be handled by the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command.

According to The Telegraph, the first attack involved a Toyota Rav4 being set ablaze in Kentish Town, a property that had previously belonged to Starmer. The second attack occurred on May 11 at the entrance of a flat in Islington once owned by Starmer in the 1990s. The final incident reportedly targeted Starmer’s current family home in Tufnell Park, which is rented to his sister-in-law. No injuries were reported in any of the attacks.

Starmer condemned the incidents as an attack on democracy and the values the country stands for. Earlier in the investigation, 21-year-old Roman Lavrynovych, another Ukrainian national, was charged with three counts of arson with intent to endanger life and was remanded in custody. Additionally, 26-year-old Stanislav Carpiuc, a Romanian national, was also charged with conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life and remanded in custody until a hearing on June 6.

Investigators are considering various potential motives, including the possibility of involvement from a hostile state.
