White House Calls Trump’s Spending, Tax Cut Bill "Productive"
"The President reiterated how critical it is for the country to pass the One Big Beautiful Bill as quickly as possible," White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated.
Although not originally on Trump's daily agenda, the meeting came at a pivotal moment as he attempts to garner backing for the massive proposal amid opposition from various factions within his own party.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson is working to quell the growing resistance within the GOP over the bill’s sweeping measures. These include drastic tax and spending cuts, a $5 trillion increase in the debt ceiling, heightened border security funding, and efforts to reduce US regulations.
The bill initially failed to pass a committee vote on Friday, with several Republicans joining Democrats to reject it. However, it succeeded in an unusual Sunday night vote, where many of the dissenting members voted "present," enabling it to advance to the House for broader discussion.
Members of the House Freedom Caucus, such as Rep. Chip Roy, have indicated they will demand further concessions before offering their support during the floor vote.
