Netanyahu’s eternal conflict murders Israel faster than its foes

(MENAFN)
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appears increasingly cornered—faced with the choice of stepping down or continuing a war that may ultimately harm Israel more than its adversaries. In the past year and a half, Israel has failed to decisively defeat any of its enemies, and the renewed military escalation in Gaza could prove to be Netanyahu's most perilous decision yet.

Despite repeatedly vowing to “crush and destroy” Hamas, Netanyahu has fallen short of this goal. Even Israeli intelligence assessments indicate that such a victory remains out of reach. Undeterred, he has launched a new operation in Gaza dubbed "Gideon’s Chariots," which reportedly aims to reoccupy the entire coastal enclave.

This move came shortly after the U.S. negotiated the release of Israeli-American soldier Idan Alexander, who had been captured during the October 7, 2023, attacks. Hamas claims the deal included a promise that Washington would pressure Israel to permit humanitarian aid into Gaza following an eight-week blockade. Instead, Israel intensified its bombing campaign, killing approximately 300 Palestinians and displacing over 300,000 within two days. Netanyahu later declared that even if all Israeli captives were freed, the war would continue.

Rumors have circulated about a deepening rift between Netanyahu and former U.S. President Donald Trump, with reports suggesting Trump had cut off direct contact and was considering recognizing a Palestinian state. However, Trump dismissed these claims in a Fox News interview, reiterating his support for Israel and controversially calling October 7 “one of the most violent days in history.”

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed Israel's stance in a CBS interview, stating that the U.S. supports Hamas’s destruction, while also pursuing a deal to free more hostages. His comments made it clear that the war’s continuation is about defeating Hamas, not just securing the captives' release.

Speculation about U.S. pressure on Israel is not new. In late 2023, reports claimed that then-President Joe Biden angrily ended a phone call with Netanyahu. Further allegations, including those in journalist Bob Woodward’s book War, portrayed Biden as deeply frustrated with the Israeli leader, reportedly calling him a “bad fing guy” and a “fing liar.”

Despite repeated headlines about potential American pushback, U.S. policy continues to align closely with Israel’s hardline approach in Gaza, while Netanyahu presses forward with a war many now fear is endangering Israel’s future more than safeguarding it.
