Trump Considers Reviving Privatization of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac

(MENAFN) U.S. Leader Donald Trump revealed on Wednesday that he is earnestly contemplating the possibility of taking Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac—two major players in the mortgage finance sector—public once again.

He pointed to their robust fiscal condition as a key reason why the timing might now be appropriate for such a move.

In a message shared on his Truth Social network, Trump said he plans to discuss the matter with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director William Pulte before arriving at a definitive conclusion.

“Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are doing very well, throwing off a lot of CASH,” Trump stated. “The time would seem to be right.”

The two mortgage institutions have been under federal conservatorship since the 2008 financial meltdown, a status enforced by the FHFA.

Despite previous administrations exploring the idea of ending this government oversight, no concrete actions were taken.

Trump’s comments indicate a possible renewal of efforts to return the companies to private ownership.

These firms serve a crucial function in the American housing market by buying and insuring home loans.
