(MENAFN) United States Leader Donald Trump met privately with House Republicans on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, aiming to solidify backing for his massive spending and tax reduction initiative.
This significant legislative package marks a pivotal point in his domestic policy push.
Prior to the meeting, Trump told the press that he is acting as a "cheerleader" for his party and looked forward to a "very good discussion" with lawmakers.
House Speaker Mike Johnson is striving to quell growing discord within various factions of the Republican caucus over the "one, big, beautiful" bill.
The legislation encompasses broad measures, including extensive tax and spending cuts, a proposed USD5 trillion increase to the debt ceiling, significant new funding for border enforcement, and further dismantling of federal regulatory structures.
The proposal initially failed to pass a committee vote last Friday, with several Republicans aligning with Democrats to block it.
However, it was later approved in an unusual Sunday night session, during which many initial objectors voted "present."
This maneuver allowed the bill to advance to the full House for further deliberation.
Some lawmakers, particularly members of the House Freedom Caucus such as Representative Chip Roy, have made it clear they will need additional compromises before agreeing to back the bill on the House floor.
Meanwhile, Representative Thomas Massie continues to firmly oppose the legislation, criticizing its projected impact on the national debt and refusing to shift his stance.
