Russia hits Apple with USD93,000 LGBTQ propaganda

(MENAFN) A Moscow court has imposed a 7.5 million ruble ($93,000) fine on Apple for violating Russia’s laws against LGBTQ propaganda. The fine was handed down on Monday after the company was found guilty of breaching Russia’s Administrative Violations Code. Specifically, Apple was accused of promoting non-traditional sexual relationships, gender reassignment, and child-free ideologies online, which are prohibited under the law.

The case originated from Apple’s distribution of a television series through its streaming platform, which contained scenes that the Russian media regulator, Roskomnadzor, claimed violated the country’s LGBTQ propaganda laws. The Tagansky Court found Apple guilty of three separate offenses, with a fine of over $30,000 for each violation.

The court session was closed to the public due to the confidentiality of the company’s internal information. No additional details about the case were released.

Russia has been tightening its laws regarding LGBTQ content for years. In 2013, the country banned the promotion of such content to minors, and in 2022, these restrictions were expanded to include adults. Last year, Russia also labeled the 'international LGBT movement' as a terrorist organization.

In a separate ruling on the same day, the court fined Apple an additional $37,000 for failing to remove content deemed illegal under Russian law. The company has faced similar fines in the past, including a $10,000 penalty in January 2024 for not removing Adolf Hitler’s book Mein Kampf, which is considered extremist material in Russia, from its Apple Books platform.
