Child Injures Classmate with Knife in Finnish School Recess Incident

(MENAFN) A child under the age of 12 wounded another student with a knife at Renko School in southern Finland on Wednesday, according to local police.

The incident took place during recess at the school, located roughly 15 kilometers from Hämeenlinna's city center. Authorities received an alert at 9:40 a.m. local time and dispatched several patrol units to the scene.

Police reported that the school's principal, who was supervising the recess, promptly intervened and separated the two children. By the time officers arrived, the suspect was under the principal’s supervision. The injured student suffered minor injuries and did not require medical treatment.

"There was no danger to other pupils at any point," the police stated in a statement.

Detective Inspector Jani Stepanoff mentioned that investigations are ongoing, with interviews being conducted. However, he refrained from commenting on the motive or additional details, as the investigation is still in its early stages.

Both the victim and the suspect are under the age of 12, which is below Finland’s criminal responsibility threshold.

The school, which serves around 130 students from grades one to nine, has notified parents about the incident. Authorities reassured the public that the situation is under control.

This event follows a separate stabbing incident just one day earlier at a school in Pirkkala, near Tampere. In that case, three students were injured, and a fourth student was arrested as a suspect. The wounded students received medical attention, and their injuries are not considered life-threatening.
