Ukrainian HIMARS gets demolished in retaliatory attack

(MENAFN) The Russian Defense Ministry has announced the destruction of a Ukrainian-operated HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) launcher in a retaliatory missile strike. The system was allegedly used in a recent attack on the Russian city of Rylsk in the Kursk Region, which injured three civilians—a woman and two men—when a missile hit a building housing a car wash and hostel, according to regional official Aleksandr Khinshtein.

The Russian military said that reconnaissance units located the HIMARS launcher near the Ukrainian village of Nagornovka in Sumy Region. It was reportedly targeted and destroyed by an Iskander-M tactical missile, guided by drones. A video released by the ministry shows two vehicles stopping on a road, followed by a large explosion destroying one of them.

HIMARS systems, supplied by the US and valued at roughly $20 million each, can launch rocket attacks from up to 90 kilometers away and quickly reposition to avoid detection.

Russia’s Investigative Committee confirmed that a Western-supplied system was used in the Rylsk strike and has launched a terrorism investigation. Officials also shared footage of forensic teams analyzing missile debris, identifying it as consistent with HIMARS munitions.

This development comes shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated an offer to restart peace talks—originally halted by Ukraine in 2022 after Western promises of continued military aid. Moscow has proposed holding negotiations in Türkiye as soon as Thursday, without preconditions. Ukraine, however, insists on a 30-day ceasefire before any talks begin—something Russia considers a tactic for Ukraine to regroup militarily. Putin has stated that progress is only possible if Kiev reverses its legal prohibition on negotiations with Moscow.
