Russia Intercepts 159 Ukrainian Drones in Overnight Strike

(MENAFN) Russia's Ministry of Defense announced on Wednesday that its air defense systems intercepted a total of 159 Ukrainian drones during an extensive overnight operation spanning multiple regions.

According to the ministry, “Between 8:00 p.m. on May 20 and 4:05 a.m. on May 21 Moscow time (1700-0105 GMT), on-duty air defenses intercepted and destroyed 127 fixed-wing Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles” across several Russian territories. The statement further noted that an additional 32 drones were neutralized between 4:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Moscow time (0100-0500 GMT).

The drone activity appeared to be widespread, with regional breakdowns showing heavy concentrations of interceptions. Of the 159 drones brought down, 53 were reportedly shot down over the Oryol Region, 51 over Bryansk, and 37 over Kursk. Moscow's airspace was also targeted, with six drones intercepted in the capital area, the ministry detailed.

The overnight wave of drone attacks marks one of the largest single reported barrages by Ukrainian forces in recent months, highlighting the escalating use of unmanned systems in the ongoing conflict. Russian officials have not indicated any casualties or damage resulting from the attempted strikes.

The ministry did not provide further details on the intended targets or the launch points of the drones, and there has been no immediate response from Ukrainian authorities regarding the operation.
