Syrian Foreign Minister Hails EU Move to Lift Sanctions on Syria

(MENAFN) Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani praised the European Union's recent decision to remove economic sanctions on Syria, describing it as “a new historic achievement” for the nation.

“We, together with our people, have achieved a historic victory through the lifting of EU sanctions on Syria,” Shaibani stated on X.

He expressed gratitude toward EU countries and all contributors to “this victory.”

According to al-Shaibani, the decision will enhance “security, stability and prosperity in Syria,” and he emphasized that “Syria deserves a bright future worthy of its people and civilization.”

His remarks came in response to an earlier declaration by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.

“Today, we took the decision to lift our economic sanctions on Syria. We want to help the Syrian people rebuild a new, inclusive and peaceful Syria,” she posted on X.

Last week, the U.S. Treasury Department announced it was coordinating with the State Department and the National Security Council to follow through on President Donald Trump’s directives regarding the removal of sanctions on Syria. The U.S. originally imposed sanctions on Syria in 1979 and significantly intensified them after the civil war began in 2011.

Bashar al-Assad, who had governed Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia on December 8, marking the end of the Baath Party's rule that began in 1963.

Ahmed Al-Sharaa, the leader of the opposition forces that removed Assad, was appointed as transitional president in late January.
