South Korea, U.S. Begin Joint Operation
The joint six-week effort has been launched in the Mungyeong region, identified as the crash site of a U.S. F-51D fighter aircraft during the conflict, as reported by a news agency.
Throughout the operation, representatives from South Korea’s Defense Ministry and the U.S. Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) will concentrate on locating and retrieving parts of the downed aircraft.
These components are considered vital for the identification of the pilot who was operating the jet at the time of the crash.
A similar initiative was carried out the previous year but did not succeed, according to the agency involved.
During the Korean War, more than 1.7 million American service members were deployed, resulting in over 36,000 fatalities. To this day, approximately 7,500 U.S. personnel are still listed as missing.
