Attack Claims Lives of Mexico City Mayor’s Aides
(MENAFN) In a brazen and shocking act of violence, two trusted members of Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada’s inner circle were fatally shot on Tuesday.
The incident, which authorities have labeled as unparalleled in the city's political history, targeted Ximena Guzman, who served as Brugada’s personal assistant, and Jose Munoz, a political consultant.
According to law enforcement, the pair were pursued by armed individuals riding a motorcycle along a major thoroughfare in the city.
The assailants executed the attack at close range, indicating a deliberate and well-planned operation.
The Ministry of Citizen Security, in conjunction with the local prosecutor’s office, has initiated formal inquiries to uncover the motivation behind the deadly ambush and to bring those accountable to justice.
“I feel deeply saddened by the loss of Ximena and Pepe, with whom I shared many years of hopes and struggles to transform … Mexico City,” Mayor Brugada stated during a press briefing held soon after the tragic event.
Expressing her administration’s grief, she added, “In the city government, we are deeply shocked and mourning the loss of two beloved colleagues,” emphasizing that, “The case is being pursued with the same rigor and commitment with which our institutions operate every day.”
Although officials in the capital have previously faced threats — most notably the city’s current security chief Omar Garcia Harfuch, who narrowly escaped a 2020 attack allegedly orchestrated by the New Generation Jalisco Cartel — the killing of both Guzman and Munoz is being described as without precedent.
