Spanish Lawmakers Urge Arms Embargo on Israel

(MENAFN) Spain’s legislative body has approved a symbolic resolution urging the national administration to implement a weapons ban on Israel, prompted by its recent military actions in Gaza.

Although the motion is non-binding, it represents a significant political stance amid increasing international concern over the situation in the region.

The proposal was presented by the progressive Sumar coalition—part of the governing alliance—and received backing from opposition groups such as Podemos and the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC).

The measure passed narrowly, with 176 votes in favor and 171 against, according to a news agency. Opposition to the motion came from the conservative People’s Party (PP) and the far-right party Vox, while other parliamentary groups supported the initiative.

Supporters of the resolution welcomed its approval, emphasizing its call for Spain to halt the export of any goods that could bolster Israel’s military capabilities.

This includes items such as helmets, protective vests, and dual-use fuels that could be repurposed for combat.

In addition, the motion advocates for amending Spain’s foreign trade regulations to prevent defense-related deals with any country suspected of perpetrating genocide or crimes against humanity.

It specifically denounces Israel’s military campaign in Gaza as grounds for such restrictions.

Veronica Martinez, speaking on behalf of Sumar, declared that Spain "cannot cooperate with a state that commits genocide or war crimes." She further argued that the Israeli defense sector "must not be supported under the current circumstances in Gaza."

Echoing these sentiments, Ione Belarra, leader of Podemos, appealed for the Spanish government to hold an urgent meeting this week to formalize a decree prohibiting arms transactions with Israel.

"Palestinians cannot wait any longer. Netanyahu is killing, bombing, starving, and depriving them of medical care. What is happening is the biggest ethnic cleansing of the 21st century," Belarra said, referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as "the Hitler of our time."
