Singapore Launches AI Heart Scan System to Transform Cardiac Care
(MENAFN) The National Heart Center Singapore (NHCS) is launching a pilot program to introduce an artificial intelligence (AI) system in three public hospitals. This initiative aims to drastically reduce the time needed to analyze cardiac scans, allowing for quicker diagnoses of coronary artery disease.
Currently, cardiologists and radiographers require between two to four hours to interpret cardiac imaging scans and evaluate coronary artery disease risk. However, with the new AI system, this process will be completed in under 10 minutes, according to Lohendran Baskaran, a senior consultant at NHCS.
The AI system has shown an impressive accuracy rate of 85 to 99 percent in controlled environments, and the upcoming year-long trial will assess its effectiveness in real-world clinical settings. The system, called the Singapore heart lesion analyzer, is set to begin its trial phase in the third quarter of 2025.
Coronary artery disease remains the leading cause of cardiovascular-related deaths in Singapore. In 2023, the country saw 8,311 deaths attributed to cardiovascular diseases, accounting for nearly 30 percent of total deaths.
