Zelensky Says Ukraine, Russia May Sign Memorandum

(MENAFN) Ukrainian Leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy has suggested that Kyiv and Moscow might agree on a memorandum containing terms for a ceasefire.

This potential development follows a phone conversation between the leaders of the United States and Russia a day earlier.

On Monday, American President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in a discussion lasting more than two hours, focusing on advancing peace efforts in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

During the exchange, Putin expressed Moscow’s willingness to collaborate with Kyiv on drafting a memorandum that could serve as a foundation for a future peace agreement.

Putin described the conversation as “frank and substantive,” emphasizing at a press event in Sochi that both nations must demonstrate the “maximum desire” for peace and aim to find “compromises” that are mutually beneficial.

Zelenskyy later addressed the media in Kyiv, stating, “There could be a respective memorandum in the bilateral format, which may then lead to a roadmap toward ending the war, that is, toward a full agreement. This memorandum, supported by both countries, would include provisions for a ceasefire.”

Although the precise details of the memorandum remain unclear, Zelenskyy noted that if Russia officially presents such a proposal, Ukraine would not be left in the dark.

He affirmed that Kyiv would shape its stance after reviewing the content of Moscow’s initiative.

Zelenskyy also revealed that he held two discussions with the US President—one prior to Trump’s dialogue with Putin and another “lengthy” follow-up conversation.

This later call included the participation of European leaders from France, Finland, Germany, Italy, as well as representatives from the European Union.
