Trump Urges Caution on More Russia Sanctions
His comments came shortly after a two-hour telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump described the interaction’s tone and atmosphere as “excellent,” while Putin labeled the dialogue as “very useful.”
Addressing the press at the White House soon after the discussion, Trump signaled resistance to intensifying punitive measures against Moscow.
He emphasized the importance of preserving the current diplomatic momentum, stating, “Because I think there’s a chance of getting something done, and if you do that, you could also make it much worse.”
He acknowledged, however, that further sanctions might still become necessary in the future.
Trump mentioned that directly after speaking with Putin, he shared the contents of their exchange with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.
Additionally, he informed leaders from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, and the European Commission.
According to the media, European Union officials were reportedly “stunned” by Trump’s interpretation of the agreement reached during the dialogue.
A source acquainted with the call revealed that the U.S. leader appears “not ready to put greater pressure” on Putin, raising concerns among allies about Washington's current approach.
