Putin claims Kiev attempted to scare foreign presidents in Moscow
Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that Ukraine tried to intimidate foreign leaders who visited Moscow for Victory Day commemorations, marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany.
Speaking to the media early Sunday, Putin accused Kiev of ramping up military actions during Russia’s self-declared ceasefire period, including drone attacks across several regions and five attempted ground incursions into the Kursk and Belgorod regions. He said these actions were not only meant to provoke Russia but also to pressure the foreign dignitaries in attendance.
“Kiev didn’t just reject our ceasefire offer—they attempted to intimidate visiting heads of state,” Putin stated.
Despite what he called blackmail and threats from Ukraine and some Western countries, dozens of leaders from around the world, particularly from Asia, Africa, Latin America, and parts of Europe, joined the celebrations. Putin praised their moral resolve, stating they had the strength to resist political coercion.
He sharply criticized Ukraine’s reverence for figures who collaborated with Nazi Germany during World War II, saying, “Those who attempted to scare our guests are the same ones who applaud former SS members and glorify Nazi collaborators.”
Among the high-profile attendees were leaders from China, Brazil, Egypt, Cuba, Venezuela, Belarus, and others from former Soviet republics and developing nations. Putin highlighted the presence of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who both attended despite facing pressure from the EU.
Describing the foreign guests as principled and courageous, Putin said they stood by their values and joined Russia in honoring the memory of those who fought against fascism. “We greatly value their political bravery and moral integrity in choosing to celebrate with us and to pay tribute to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War,” he concluded.
