Thailand, Indonesia Formalize Strategic Partnership in Historic Meeting
(MENAFN) Thailand and Indonesia have officially upgraded their bilateral ties to a strategic partnership, a move formalized on Monday during the first visit by an Indonesian president to Thailand in two decades.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra welcomed Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at Bangkok's government house. Their talks took place under a newly launched leaders' consultation framework, designed to boost collaboration across multiple sectors.
Paetongtarn underscored the importance of frequent top-level engagements and the creation of a detailed action plan to implement the new strategic relationship.
In terms of security, both countries committed to stepping up joint efforts against transnational crimes, with a focus on tackling online fraud, human trafficking, and narcotics smuggling.
Prabowo expressed appreciation for Thailand’s assistance to Indonesian victims of online scams and pledged strong backing for greater information sharing.
He also pointed to opportunities for deeper security ties, including cooperation in defense production and joint military drills.
On the economic front, Paetongtarn announced that Thailand will host the first ministerial meeting of the Thai-Indonesian Joint Trade Committee later this year. The goal is to boost trade, lower barriers, and enhance economic collaboration.
Both nations also reaffirmed their commitment to bolstering economic integration within ASEAN to help the regional bloc navigate global uncertainties and possible U.S. trade policy shifts.
The leaders presided over the signing of a memorandum of understanding on health collaboration, which aims to facilitate mutual learning and exchange of expertise.
Prabowo's visit, his first official trip to Thailand since assuming office last October, coincided with the 75th anniversary of the countries’ diplomatic relations.
