Kremlin announces Putin ‘doing whatever possible’ for Ukraine peace
According to Peskov, although Ukraine publicly claims it’s ready for a ceasefire, in practice it avoids negotiations. He argued that any temporary truce would simply give Ukraine time to reinforce its military.
“During a ceasefire, Ukraine would continue mass mobilization, train new troops, and give rest to those already deployed,” Peskov explained. “Why should we give them such an advantage?” He added that Western arms deliveries to Ukraine should also stop during any pause, otherwise the ceasefire would be skewed in Kiev’s favor.
Peskov emphasized that President Putin is committed to a peaceful and diplomatic settlement but lacks willing partners. “Putin is doing whatever he can for peace,” he said. “But with no peaceful path available, we must proceed with the military operation.”
The Kremlin spokesperson expressed hope that former U.S. President Donald Trump could mediate in the future, noting that Trump might influence the Ukrainian government by bringing more “flexibility, political will, and wisdom” to the situation.
Russia had proposed a 72-hour ceasefire from May 8 to May 11 to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany, calling it a humanitarian gesture and a step toward peace talks without preconditions. However, Ukraine rejected the proposal as a manipulation tactic and countered with a call for a 30-day truce.
Despite Moscow’s ceasefire offer, the Russian Defense Ministry reported thousands of Ukrainian attacks during the period, including four attempted incursions into Russia’s Kursk and Belgorod regions.
