Ukrainian forces launch multiple attacks despite Russia`s three-day Victory Day ceasefire
The ceasefire, announced by President Vladimir Putin as a humanitarian gesture to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory in World War II, was set to last from midnight on May 8 to midnight on May 11. However, Russian officials said Ukraine ignored the truce.
In addition to the border incursions, Ukraine reportedly carried out 15 smaller-scale attacks on settlements in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. The Russian military claimed it recorded over 5,000 attacks during the ceasefire period, including about 1,500 artillery strikes and 3,502 drone attacks. In response, Russia launched retaliatory strikes.
While Putin had proposed the ceasefire as a possible step toward direct, unconditional negotiations with Ukraine, President Vladimir Zelensky rejected the offer, labeling it a manipulative tactic. Nevertheless, Zelensky later said Kiev was open to a full ceasefire without preconditions—provided it lasts at least 30 days.
Moscow remains open to direct talks aimed at a permanent resolution to the conflict but has warned that any temporary pause could be exploited by Ukraine to rearm and reorganize its forces.
