Kim Jong Un Faces War Crimes Investigation for Backing Russia

(MENAFN) North Korean leader Kim Jong Un could face a war crimes investigation at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague due to Pyongyang's backing of Russia in its conflict with Ukraine, according to a former ICC president. Song Sang-hyun made these comments during a conference in Seoul following North Korea's recent confirmation of sending troops to assist Russia in the Ukraine war, as reported by a South Korean news agency.

Song highlighted that despite Kim not having been referred to the ICC previously for human rights violations within North Korea, Ukraine now has a legal basis to pursue a case against him. He stated, “The time is right to bring Kim Jong Un before the ICC,” emphasizing that Pyongyang's military aid to Russia offers Ukraine the necessary legal grounds to file a complaint against North Korea.

He went on to emphasize that “while a complaint filed by Ukraine would be very ideal, the ICC also has the authority to initiate an independent investigation.” Song then pressed the ICC to take more decisive action against war crimes committed by North Korea's leaders and their allies.
