Trump Suggests Vatican for Russia, Ukraine Peace Talks
(MENAFN) On Monday, U.S. Leader Donald Trump proposed that the Vatican could serve as a symbolic and meaningful location for peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
Describing the idea to journalists during an appearance at the White House, Trump expressed that hosting discussions in the Vatican "would be great" and could lend "some extra significance" to the process.
Trump elaborated further, noting that a dialogue held in Rome might aid in easing the deep-rooted animosity between the two nations.
“There's tremendous bitterness, anger,” he stated, adding that such a setting “could help some of that anger.”
Emphasizing the potential value of the location, he reiterated, “it’d be a great idea.”
Earlier the same day, Trump had a two-hour telephone conversation with Russian Leader Vladimir Putin, during which they explored options for establishing a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Trump indicated that Putin appeared interested in ending the hostilities.
"I talked to him about it," Trump said. "I said: 'When are we going to end this Vladimir?'...I said: 'When are we going to end this bloodshed, this bloodbath?' It's a bloodbath, and I do believe he wants to end it."
In addition to commenting on Putin, Trump spoke about Ukrainian Leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy, calling him a “strong person.”
While acknowledging Zelenskyy's toughness and suggesting he can be “not the easiest person to deal with,” Trump also remarked, “I think that he wants to stop” the war.
The statements reflect Trump’s perspective that both leaders may be open to negotiating an end to the violent conflict, and that the Vatican could play a role in facilitating those efforts.
