Supreme Court Approves Trump's Plan to Rescind Venezuelan Migrant Protections
TPS is a U.S. government program offering temporary immigration relief to individuals from countries facing exceptional circumstances, such as ongoing armed conflict, natural disasters, or other crises that make it unsafe for their citizens to return home.
The Biden administration had announced in March 2021 that Venezuelans would be eligible for TPS, citing political instability in their home country. This federal program, established in 1990, aims to provide humanitarian aid to foreign individuals in need.
This recent Supreme Court ruling comes shortly after another decision three days prior that hindered the Trump administration's rigorous immigration policies in a separate case concerning Venezuelan detainees. In that instance, the court stopped the administration's attempts to deport Venezuelan immigrants to El Salvador under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act, noting the government's failure to properly inform these individuals of its deportation intentions.
