UK Opposition Leader Vows to Undo Starmer’s EU Deal
She criticized the arrangement as a "surrender deal," asserting that it compromises the fundamental achievements of Brexit.
Badenoch voiced her concerns shortly after the UK and the EU introduced a new accord at a London summit designed to recalibrate their relationship following Brexit.
She argued that the agreement represents a step "backwards" for the United Kingdom and threatens essential Brexit accomplishments, particularly national autonomy and legislative control.
Highlighting a key point of contention, Badenoch firmly stated, "Anything that brings back ECJ jurisdiction, we cannot have,” referencing the European Court of Justice.
She emphasized her role in ending ECJ authority in the UK on December 31, 2023, and criticized the deal for potentially reintroducing it through a process of ongoing legal alignment. “I ended ECJ jurisdiction in Britain on Dec. 31, 2023. I cannot believe that 18 months later, we’re getting it back through dynamic alignment," she remarked.
Badenoch reiterated her stance on social media, declaring, "We will reverse this terrible deal at the first opportunity," signaling her party's intention to challenge the arrangement if given the chance.
The newly established agreement between the UK and EU encompasses areas such as fishing rights, commerce, military cooperation, and energy policy.
It emerged from the first major diplomatic gathering between the two entities since Brexit.
Prime Minister Starmer welcomed key EU figures, including European Council President Antonio Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and EU foreign affairs head Kaja Kallas, at the high-profile meeting.
Starmer characterized the outcome as a “win-win,” highlighting provisions such as extending European fishing vessel access to British waters for an additional 12 years.
In exchange, the UK will secure a veterinary accord that is projected to enhance British agricultural and food product exports to the European market.
