WHO Members Approve Groundbreaking Global Pandemic Agreement
The WHO Pandemic Agreement, along with the resolution for its final approval, is set to be formally adopted during a plenary session of the World Health Assembly (WHA) on Tuesday. The WHA serves as the decision-making body of the WHO.
The approval, granted on Monday by the WHA's Committee A, follows over three years of intense negotiations.
The pandemic agreement, a pioneering initiative, seeks to address existing gaps and inequalities in pandemic prevention, preparation, and response, promoting stronger global collaboration and cooperation, according to a WHO statement.
"Governments from all over the world are making their countries, and our interconnected global community, more equitable, healthier and safer from the threats posed by pathogens and viruses of pandemic potential," stated Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO.
