Harvard Faces Another Grant Termination
This decision comes in response to the institution’s "continued failure to address anti-Semitic harassment and race discrimination," according to an official post on X.
The department emphasized that "HHS is taking decisive action to uphold civil rights in higher education." It stressed that acts of discrimination "will not be tolerated" within academic environments and underlined that "federal funds must support institutions that protect all students.”
This move aims to ensure that public resources are directed toward schools that foster safe and inclusive spaces for every student.
Previously, the Trump administration had already suspended over USD2.2 billion in federal awards designated for Harvard, along with USD60 million in additional contracts.
In response to these financial sanctions, Harvard filed a lawsuit against the administration.
The university argues that the funding freezes infringe on the First Amendment and violate federal regulations that prohibit the president from directly or indirectly instructing the IRS to initiate or end audits or investigations.
In an effort to continue academic pursuits despite the cutbacks, Harvard President Alan Garber recently revealed that the university would allocate USD250 million from its own reserves to maintain research initiatives.
These financial penalties come amid broader threats from the Trump administration to halt federal support for several universities.
The administration cites growing concerns over campus demonstrations supporting Palestine and the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives as part of the rationale for such measures.
