Kremlin voices remarks on recent peace initiative from US

(MENAFN) The Kremlin has stated that it has no information about any Ukrainian proposal to create a demilitarized zone along the current front lines, despite claims by a U.S. official. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told TASS on Wednesday that Kiev has made no public statements on the matter.

His remarks were in response to comments by Keith Kellogg, a special envoy for U.S. President Donald Trump, who told Fox News that Ukraine was open to a ceasefire and the establishment of a 30-kilometer-wide demilitarized buffer zone, with both sides withdrawing 15 kilometers from the front lines. However, Ukrainian officials have not issued any formal statements supporting this proposal.

Although Ukraine has repeatedly called for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire in recent months, it has not mentioned any plans involving a demilitarized zone.

Earlier this year, both Russia and Ukraine agreed to a U.S.-brokered partial truce in March, focused on halting attacks on energy infrastructure. However, the Russian military has claimed that Ukraine repeatedly breached the agreement. Another ceasefire, declared unilaterally by Russia over Easter, also saw thousands of violations by Ukrainian forces, according to Moscow.

Most recently, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a unilateral 72-hour ceasefire from May 7–11 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany. Moscow expressed hope that the pause could lead to direct peace talks without preconditions. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky rejected the move, calling it manipulative, and instead escalated drone strikes on Russian territory, causing numerous civilian casualties. The Kremlin has reiterated that these actions will not impact Russia’s ceasefire commitment.
