Russia announces exceeding 500 Ukrainian drones shot down in 24 hours
The surge in aerial assaults coincides with a ceasefire declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin, which is set to begin at midnight on May 7-8 and end at midnight on May 10-11. The truce is framed as a humanitarian gesture marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany and is intended to potentially lead to “direct negotiations with Kiev without preconditions.”
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov reiterated that Russia intends to proceed with the planned ceasefire, despite the increased drone attacks. He accused the Ukrainian government of showing its “inclination to terrorist actions” by escalating the strikes.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected the ceasefire proposal, calling it a Russian “manipulation.” According to Russian war crimes investigator Rodion Miroshnik, drone attacks have resulted in record civilian casualties, with 15 killed and 142 injured in the past week alone.
