Iran Firmly Rejects U.S. Stance on Uranium Enrichment Program
Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei statement came during a regular press briefing in Tehran in response to comments made on Sunday by U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, who informed a news agency, "We have one very, very clear red line, and that is enrichment, and we cannot allow (Iran to have) even 1 percent of an enrichment capability."
Baghaei firmly declared, "We do not seek permission from anyone for uranium enrichment on Iran's soil and the United States is not in a position to be able to give or not to give permission to a country regarding this right that has been stated in the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)."
He further commented that suggesting any nation pursuing uranium enrichment has non-peaceful intentions is a "conscious fallacy" intended to mislead the public, pointing out that "here are states that are enriching uranium but do not have nuclear weapons."
Baghaei also highlighted the shifting stances of the U.S. following each round of indirect talks between the two nations.
He noted that after each negotiation session, "we feel that progress has been achieved and, at least, we understand each other's viewpoints, but unfortunately, upon arriving in Washington, the American sides express other positions."
Regarding the U.S. continuing to impose sanctions on Iran while negotiations are underway, Baghaei suggested that a key challenge in dealing with the United States is that "you are faced with a party that is not committed to any diplomatic process."
