UK Targets Displaced U.S. Researchers with Sustained Financial Support

(MENAFN) British scientific organizations are reportedly offering sustained financial support and fellowship opportunities to entice researchers departing the United States, citing pressures emanating from the White House, a news agency detailed on Sunday.

These initiatives are designed to draw in global expertise and bolster enduring research endeavors within rapidly expanding sectors like quantum computing and antibiotic resistance, the report stated.

This effort seeks to establish "Trump-proof" British science, insulating it from abrupt funding reductions and ideological limitations that have recently impacted pertinent research in the United States, according to the news agency.

Since assuming office, U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has advocated for significant reductions in science funding and mandated the termination of research in fields such as diversity, vaccines, and climate change, the article noted.

The news agency disclosed that the Royal Society is set to unveil a novel Faraday Fellowship for international researchers, backed by up to 30 million pounds. This funding will allocate up to 4 million pounds or more in exceptional circumstances to individual scientists or teams for projects spanning 5-10 years.

Concurrently, the Royal Academy of Engineering will introduce an expedited pathway to facilitate "exceptional international researchers and inventors" in relocating to and working in Britain.

Successful candidates will be granted up to 3 million pounds over a decade to advance and scale up groundbreaking climate solutions, as part of the academy's existing 150 million-pound Green Future Fellowship program.

These programs, the report indicated, supplement a comparable 54 million-pound initiative announced earlier this month by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. That scheme will cover relocation expenses and project funding for approximately ten research teams in government-prioritized areas including life sciences, artificial intelligence, and green energy.
