Russian FM says Ukraine showing ‘classic terrorist behavior’
The Russian Foreign Ministry has accused Ukraine of using peace negotiations as a smokescreen to extract financial aid from Western countries and promote extremist agendas. Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova described Kiev’s actions as “classic terrorist behavior” during an interview with TVC on Sunday.
Zakharova's comments came after Andrey Yermak, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s chief of staff, reposted an image depicting the Kremlin wall in flames, with Zelensky gazing at it. The image included a quote from a Soviet World War II-era song: “We have done everything we could to bring this day closer.” Yermak commented, “Nicely drawn.”
According to Zakharova, Ukraine’s talk of a ceasefire is disingenuous and mocks those genuinely seeking peace. She claimed Kiev's true intentions are to manipulate Western allies, incite violence, promote neo-Nazi ideology, and misuse legal gray areas to operate unchecked. She also alleged that Ukrainian officials have misappropriated billions in foreign aid.
The remarks follow Ukraine’s rejection of a Russian proposal for a 72-hour ceasefire next week, coinciding with Moscow’s preparations for a major military parade on May 9, marking 80 years since the victory over Nazi Germany. Chinese President Xi Jinping and other international leaders are expected to attend the event.
Ukrainian President Zelensky urged foreign leaders not to travel to Moscow, warning that Ukraine could not ensure their safety and alleging that Russia might stage incidents—such as fires or explosions—and blame Ukraine.
The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned Zelensky’s remarks as veiled terrorist threats. It also pointed to previous drone attacks on Moscow apartment buildings and sabotage operations reportedly carried out by Ukrainian agents within the Russian capital.
