Couple of law enforcement figures murdered in weaponized assault in Southern Russia
(MENAFN) An armed assault on a police patrol in Makhachkala, the capital of Russia’s Dagestan Republic, has resulted in the deaths of three people, including two police officers, according to regional authorities.
The attack occurred on Monday and involved two assailants, both of whom were killed during the confrontation, the regional Interior Ministry confirmed. Earlier reports suggested more attackers had fled in a stolen police vehicle, but this was later corrected. TASS news agency cited the ministry, affirming that both suspects were neutralized at the scene.
Initially, officials stated three police officers had been killed, but this was revised to two officers dead and two others injured. Graphic footage posted online shows one attacker with a large knife approaching a police SUV, and another wielding a shortened Kalashnikov-style rifle. One of the injured officers is seen trying to take cover.
In a dramatic moment captured in video, the knife-wielding suspect attempted to fatally stab the wounded officer, but the officer managed to overpower and kill the attacker using the assailant’s own weapon. Images online show the suspect with severe knife injuries lying in a pool of blood.
The local health ministry reported that at least five people were wounded in the attack, including three civilians. One injured victim later died in hospital. Initially, there were reports that some suspects were hospitalized and others detained, but authorities later confirmed that only the two attackers had been involved.
The Russian Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case. The charges include attempted murder of law enforcement officers, hijacking, and theft of firearms.
