Trump declares call with Putin
(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans for a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, aiming to address the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine and discuss trade matters. Posting on Truth Social, Trump expressed hope that the talks would help “stop the bloodbath” and lead to a ceasefire. He added that he would also speak with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and several NATO leaders later that day, anticipating a “productive” outcome.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed preparations are underway for the Trump-Putin call but did not offer further details.
This initiative follows the first direct talks in three years between Russian and Ukrainian representatives, held in Istanbul, Türkiye. Those negotiations led to a major agreement: a prisoner exchange involving 1,000 captives from each side and plans for continued dialogue, including the preparation of detailed ceasefire proposals.
Additionally, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio earlier on Saturday to discuss the Istanbul negotiations. The call, initiated by the U.S., highlighted America’s support for the agreements and its willingness to remain engaged in the peace process. Lavrov acknowledged the constructive role Washington played in facilitating Ukraine's participation in talks and signaled Russia's openness to further cooperation with the U.S. on resolving the conflict.
In a recent Fox News interview, Trump expressed confidence in reaching a deal, citing his strong rapport with Putin and a desire to arrange an in-person meeting soon.
