Independent Dan Claims Victory in Romania's Presidential Runoff
This election was a rerun, necessitated by the annulment of the initial 2024 results due to claims of campaign irregularities and foreign meddling.
Dan, advocating for pro-EU policies, pledged to reinforce legal reforms, sustain aid to Ukraine, and enhance Romania's Western alliances. In contrast, Simion, who led the first round with 40.96% (Dan received 20.99%), campaigned on a "Romania First" agenda, proposing tax cuts, reduced EU influence, and a decrease in military support for Ukraine.
By 9 p.m. Sunday, official AEP figures indicated that 11.64 million Romanians, representing 64.72% of registered voters—including over 1.6 million overseas citizens—had participated in the presidential runoff. This turnout significantly surpassed the first-round's 53.21%, which saw 9.57 million voters cast ballots.
