Center-Right Leads Portugal's Parliamentary Elections, Short of Majority

(MENAFN) Portugal's recent parliamentary elections saw the center-right Democratic Alliance, under Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, secure the most seats, according to official results. However, the victory fell short of a majority, leaving the party needing coalition partners to form a government.

The Democratic Alliance obtained 32.1% of the vote, translating to 86 seats in the 230-member parliament, significantly below the 116 required for a solo majority. The Socialist Party placed second with 23.38% of the vote, gaining 58 seats, while the far-right Chega ("Enough") party closely followed, also winning 58 seats with 22.56% of the vote.

Key election issues included immigration, the escalating cost of living, and the housing crisis, igniting intense public discourse. Polls revealed rising voter anxiety regarding political stability and economic security.

Portugal's parliamentary system, featuring a single-chamber legislature, involves directly elected members serving four-year terms. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa dissolved parliament on March 13, triggering the snap election, the nation's third in less than four years.

Chega, which began in 2019 and was initially dismissed as a fringe party due to its extreme views, has experienced a remarkable surge into mainstream Portuguese politics. The party's swift transformation, from holding a single parliamentary seat to securing 58 within six years, demonstrates its effectiveness in tapping into widespread public dissatisfaction with established political parties. This discontent stems largely from ongoing problems like housing shortages, a strained public healthcare system, and persistent corruption scandals.
