Moscow`s spy director claims UK possibly to fabricate provocation against Russia

(MENAFN) Russia’s foreign intelligence chief, Sergey Naryshkin, has suggested that the United Kingdom might stage a provocation against Russia, possibly involving chemical weapons in Ukraine, to falsely implicate Moscow. Speaking to TASS on Saturday, the head of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) accused the UK of having a history of conducting covert and hostile operations targeting Russia.

According to Naryshkin, Britain is capable of launching provocations anywhere if it serves its interests, and the SVR is fully aware of such clandestine activities.

In a related statement released Thursday, the SVR also alleged that British and French intelligence services have been actively trying to sabotage peace efforts in the Ukraine conflict, particularly those initiated by former U.S. President Donald Trump, and to hinder progress in restoring ties between Washington and Moscow.

Russian Ambassador to the UK, Andrey Kelin, recently commented on Western media reports that exposed Britain’s deep involvement in the Ukraine war. He said he was unsurprised by the revelations, noting that Russia had previously raised similar concerns that were dismissed as propaganda, but are now being acknowledged by British journalists.

Kelin further claimed that the lack of public debate in the UK following these media disclosures amounts to a silent acknowledgment of Britain's covert actions against Russia.

Earlier this month, The Times reported that British troops had covertly assisted Ukraine by outfitting aircraft with Storm Shadow cruise missiles and training Ukrainian forces in their use. The report also said the UK played a significant role in planning Ukraine's 2023 counteroffensive and acted as a mediator between Kiev and Washington when the operation failed to meet American expectations.
