Trump Suggests Possible Direct Deal with Xi
Trump remarked, "Yeah, I could see that. I mean, I’m not sure that it’ll be necessary, but that happened with the UK," during a discussion with a news agency.
Trump once more emphasized his consistently "good relationship" with President Xi, stating his admiration and "a lot of respect" for the Chinese leader.
He suggested that the relationship could help facilitate a productive resolution in the ongoing negotiations.
The President expressed enthusiasm about the potential for China to open its market more broadly to American firms. "One of the things I think that could be most exciting for us and also for China is that we're trying to open up China," he said, drawing a comparison to the past liberalization of the U.S. economy.
He stressed that it was now China’s turn to reciprocate, stating, "Now it's time for China to open up, and that's part of our deal, and we're going to open up China."
He highlighted this element of market liberalization as "the most exciting part" of the agreement, describing it as "like opening up a whole new world," and suggesting it could bring even greater benefits to China itself.
The comments came on the heels of a series of intense trade discussions between the U.S. and China held in Geneva, Switzerland over the weekend.
These negotiations produced a significant development: both nations agreed to markedly reduce their respective tariffs for an initial 90-day trial period.
Under this arrangement, the U.S. will lower its tariff on Chinese goods from 145 percent to 30 percent while China will cut its import tax on American products from 125 percent to 10 percent.
Both sides characterized the outcome of the talks as "constructive," signaling a major advancement after months of increasing tension driven by earlier tariff escalations initiated by the Trump administration.
