Russia hails N-Korean ‘heroism’ in Kursk Region
Speaking to President Vladimir Putin on Saturday, Gerasimov stated that North Korean troops fought alongside Russian forces and demonstrated exceptional bravery. Putin officially declared that the region, which borders Ukraine, had been fully liberated from Ukrainian control.
According to Gerasimov, the Ukrainian military suffered over 76,000 casualties during the operation, which began in August of last year. He added that Russian units are continuing to search for any remaining Ukrainian fighters and are also working to secure nearby areas, including establishing a buffer zone in Ukraine’s Sumy Region. Russian forces reportedly control four settlements and over 90 square kilometers there. In Kursk, 19 settlements have been cleared of landmines.
Putin thanked Russian troops for their efforts in repelling what he described as “neo-Nazi groups.” Gerasimov noted that North Korea’s involvement was in accordance with the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement signed between Moscow and Pyongyang last December. The pact commits both nations to mutual military support under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
The announcement comes after previous Western claims that North Korea had dispatched around 12,000 troops to Russia for potential deployment. While neither Russia nor North Korea confirmed those claims at the time, both countries have defended their right to interpret and act on the agreement as they see fit.
In response to Gerasimov’s remarks, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova wrote on Telegram, “Russia will never forget our friends.”
