EV Sales Climb Worldwide in April, Outpacing Trade Hurdles
A total of 1.5 million EVs were sold during the month. While this reflects solid year-over-year growth, the figures also showed a 12% decline from March, based on findings from UK-based research firm Rho Motion.
Between January and April 2025, global EV sales totaled 5.6 million units, marking a 29% increase from the same four-month stretch in 2024.
China led the market, with 3.3 million units sold from January through April—a 35% rise from the previous year. In April alone, sales in China jumped 32% year-over-year but slipped 9% compared to the prior month.
Across Europe, EV sales reached 1.2 million units in the first four months, up 25% year-over-year.
Several key European countries posted robust gains over this period, with sales climbing 42% in Germany, 56% in Italy, 57% in Spain, and 32% in the United Kingdom.
Conversely, France saw a 14% decline in EV sales during the same timeframe, attributed to a reduction in government incentives.
In North America, which encompasses the United States, Canada, and Mexico, EV sales rose 5% year-over-year to reach 600,000 units between January and April.
