UN Chief Emphasizes UN Key Role in Peace Operations
At the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial 2025 in Berlin, Germany, Guterres praised peacekeeping missions for their success in helping countries transition from conflict to peace, describing them as "the most globally recognized symbol of the world's ability to come together to help countries move from conflict to peace."
He also honored the sacrifice of 4,400 peacekeepers who have died in the line of duty over the years.
Guterres pointed out the numerous challenges faced by peacekeepers today, including increasingly complex conflicts, the rise in global divisions, misinformation, terrorism, and cross-border criminal activity.
"We are now facing the highest number of conflicts since the foundation of the United Nations, and record numbers of people fleeing across borders in search of safety and refuge," Guterres stated.
He called for efforts to make peacekeeping operations more adaptable, flexible, and resilient, stressing that these missions can only succeed when supported by strong mandates and consistent, predictable contributions.
The two-day event in Berlin brought together representatives from nearly 130 nations to discuss the future of peacekeeping efforts.
