India’s Premier commends country`s air defense abilities with Russian-made S-400

(MENAFN) Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended the country’s air defense capabilities on Tuesday, highlighting the effectiveness of the Russian-made S-400 surface-to-air missile system. Speaking to troops at the Adampur air base in northwest India, Modi emphasized that the combination of advanced technology and skilled personnel had contributed to the success of India’s recent military action against Pakistan, known as Operation Sindoor.

“Systems like the S-400 have significantly boosted our strength,” Modi told the soldiers while standing near the Russian defense platform. “India is now recognized for its strong security shield,” he added.

Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, involved missile strikes against alleged militant targets in Pakistan and the Pakistan-administered region of Kashmir. The move came in retaliation for a terrorist attack in India’s Jammu and Kashmir region in April that killed 26 civilians.

In response, Pakistan reportedly targeted several Indian air bases on May 10, including Adampur, which houses an S-400 battery. Pakistani state media claimed its JF-17 jets launched hypersonic missiles that destroyed the Indian base and the S-400 system. However, Indian officials quickly denied those reports as false.

Defense experts have praised India’s decision to procure the S-400 system from Russia, crediting it with effectively countering Pakistan’s attacks. India purchased five S-400 systems in a 2016 deal worth $5.4 billion, despite the risk of U.S. sanctions under the CAATSA legislation.

With the system proving its effectiveness, India has now formally asked Russia for additional S-400 units, according to India Today TV. Reports also suggest that Moscow has proposed joint production of the next-generation S-500 system with India. The S-500 would offer extended range and faster response times, with capabilities superior to the S-400, including higher-altitude interception.
